War Boutique was born in Glasgow in 1965 and got into art and textiles through early involvement in theatrical costume, set and fashion design.
He went on to study textile design at the Scottish College of Textiles (1996-2000) followed by a masters in fine art at Goldsmiths College (2007-2009). Creative work also involved stints designing defensive equipment and body armour, and he often recycles materials and iconography from these contexts.
His moniker parodies the concept of the ‘fashion house’, producing collections inspired by classic imagery and historic conflicts and trends.
War Boutique has shown in art festivals, street exhibitions, museums & galleries in Scotland, England, Europe and the US.
The recent textile series ‘The Great Game’ (2011-2014) has been exhibited at the Herbert Museum Coventry, Dresden City Museum, the Royal Geographical Society, and acquired by the National Army Museum for its permanent collection.
